How Public Speaking Improves Your Social Life?

I have an aversion to public speaking, more precisely, I should describe it as a fear. But, I am not really afraid, I get uncomfortable when I show up in front of a large group of people. My blood pressure starts going up, my skin starts to get flush, and worst of all, I lose all ability to think on the fly.

I am not so bad if I have something prepared, but if I have to think up something right then and there I used to get no clue how to start and take it forward.

To become and Learning to be a good influence public speaker is a great thing. But engaging in this area of my life probably wouldn’t be enough for me to practice public speaking every other week.

I don’t deliver many public speeches. But the benefits that I pick up from learning public speaking will help me in my everyday life.

People are attracted to the person upon the platform speaking to hundreds of people, whether he’s a missionary, a politician, or a professor. He is the one having control over the room and captivating the crowds. True charisma is the ability to attract powerfully thousands of people, not just one person.

Communities, forums, and club membership are a few platforms through which you can interact with its members to improve public speaking, communication, and leadership skills. Joining a local club is one of the best things you can do to improve several aspects of your ability to meet new people.

I joined a club about a few years ago and it has been a fantastic experience. The people there were skilled and knowledgeable and at the same time, they were warm, friendly, and supportive in helping new people learn and explore themselves to enhance their public speaking by offering them the stage to speak in front of large groups of people.

They teach to focus on things like

Movement around when you speak

How to modulate your tone of voice?

Effective Presentation Pace

Eye contact Technique

Body language

Sound familiar? These are all things you should be focusing on when meeting & speaking with new people.

You will also get criticized for your language.

A person will keep track of how many people say unnecessary words like umm.., you know, and stuff, right, like, okay, etc.

Minimizing riff-raff from your vocabulary makes you a more effective and high-value communicator– exactly what you are looking for during your conversation with someone you are interested in.

Developing Leadership Skills

One of the best aspects of communities is their focus on teaching leadership skills. Everyone at a meeting is a volunteer. There are several roles at a meeting and the person in each role gets up in front of the room and conducts that part of the meeting and or gives reports about that part of the meeting. One example is the person who listens and keeps track of language vocabulary errors. Another is the person who times the speeches. There are usually two or three people who pick up and give a 5-minute prepared speech at every meeting.

There are also people designated to evaluate speakers. When criticizing the prepared speeches people get up in front of the room and speak. This way a meeting will hardly pass when you would not get up and practice speaking. And some of these people are excellent speakers, they know how to charm an audience. They are a mixed group of people.

Some of them have been in these communities for more than 20 years. The speeches they give are generally insightful and worth a listen, even if just to see how people can communicate.

At the same time, they provide an amazingly supportive environment to learn for a new person. These people know what it was like to have such a fear of public speaking. This makes it easier to get up in front of a group of people and express themselves.

How these communities helped me to overcome the Fear of Speaking to Strangers

When you have never done it before and you begin speaking with strangers, the anxiety can be worrying. It was an expressive roller-coaster ride for me when I started.

If I talked to three people, by the end of the night I would be exhausted. As I talked to more new people, the fear and anxiety diminished. The fear of approaching strangers is very similar to the fear of getting up in front of a group of people and speaking. This is a practice as I approach someone, speak, and got comfortable with the other one, then again I became more comfortable with the other as well.

There are thousands of clubs around the country and many in New Delhi. They have weekly meetings that last two hours. When you are a beginner, the first few times you go to the club you will be a guest. You will be offered an opportunity to speak in their pickup unprepared section where they give you a random topic and you can speak for 2-3 minutes off the top of your head. It’s a great exercise.
