Now the big question is how you can prepare yourself to become an effective public speaker? The below few methods helped me a lot to learn this skill. I am sharing these skills in the hope you can also practice these and master this art. These tips will help you give an effective polished professional speech that you and your audience can be proud of.

1. First, you must know your audience before you address your audience.

This is the single first thing a presenter must prepare for before delivering a presentation. Who is your audience? What are their interests? Their backgrounds, likes, interests, and why are they coming to hear you speak?

Once you are ready with all of these questions-answer then you can start preparing your message as per your audience.

Apart from this approaching your speech as more of a “me-to-you” discussion rather than a complete broadcast makes it less stressful.

2. The next is what do you want your audience to do as a result of your speech?

What is really at the heart of your presentation? By concentrating on the end result rather than slogging through the beginning, you will be able to create a powerful punch that drives home your message instead of the confusing message.

3. Then next Share a story to connect with your audience.

In public speaking or in a marketing language this is called a “hook”. This is something that gets your audience’s attention and makes them sit up and listen to your message.

You can start off by asking questions or sharing an experience if you have any. People like to be active speakers, rather than passive listeners.

By giving them something that they can identify with and can relate with you. Also, your audience will be able to establish a connection with you. This will help you to deliver your message a whole lot easier.

But you just need to make sure your story has a beginning, a point, and an ending. There is nothing relatively as bad as telling a story to an engaged audience and then forgetting why you told it. You must need to know how you are going to make your audience connect with your presentation.

4. If you are selling a product, focus on the benefits instead of the features of that particular product.

People would love to know what a product can do and how this is going to bring change in their life rather than just knowing the feature of the product. Narrow down your product’s features until you get to the core of how this is going to solve their problem.

If you need help with figuring out the difference between a feature and a benefit you can simply ask yourself the question “So What?”

For example, if you’re selling a water filter that has robust purification technology then try to think from the customer’s perspective and ask yourself “so what?”

The answer would be something like, “It picks up dust, or any particles of water and serves you the clean water”.

Again, “so what?”

Again the answer is “You will not fall sick and will be able to live a healthy life.” Now that is a great benefit in the long run.

5. Then the next effective and powerful way to deliver your message is the use of handouts. Presenting with PowerPoint is a great way of presentation but it can be enhanced by providing your audience with useful handouts and worksheets.

Instead of giving a speech by just following your prepared note, you use these handouts to engage with your audience. Something to do, to involve by providing them with fill-in-the-blank flip charts or maybe some sort of team activities.

This will help you to reinforce and emphasize your message effectively in ways that a computer PowerPoint presentation simply cannot.

6. Finally, make sure your speech ends in a way that restates the beginning and the ultimate message of the presentation.

Speakers can get accepted with the details and leave their audiences by simply asking, “What was the point of all that?” People naturally abstract information in small portions, so focus on the big picture rather than all the pieces.

If the details are very important, save them for an after presentation handout that the audience can take with them and read over.

If you keep these techniques in mind, you’ll not only be able to overcome your fear of public speaking, but also you’ll have a very thankful audience who will in turn be more interested and eager to try your product or service.

Now it’s your turn!

Go. Practice and Deliver.
